BBC NOW in collaboration with West Glamorgan Music and AFYM offer a free orchestral student workshop with public performance in May 2020.

NOTICE: It has been necessary to change the arrangements for the next BBC National Orchestra of Wales workshop which moves from January to late April and May 2020.

NEW DATES: TUESDAY 28 APRIL, TUESDAY 5 MAY, WEDNESDAY 6 MAY 2020.

The rearranged workshop now ties in with the inaugural concert of the new conductor designate of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Ryan Bancroft – winner of the 2018 Malko Competition for Young Conductors. The concert features the world premiere of Stravaganza, a new saxophone concerto by Sir Karl Jenkins – one of the most performed living composers in the world, with soloist Jess Gillam – rising music star and first ever saxophonist to reach the final of BBC Young Musician.

This training workshop by BBC National Orchestra of Wales, for students of West Glamorgan Music and Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians, takes place over two evenings, Tuesday 28 April and Tuesday 5 May 2020 from 6.00-8.00pm at Bishop Gore School Sketty, and the workshop performance is immediately prior to the main BBC NOW Stravaganza concert, on Wednesday evening 6 May starting at 6.30pm in Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall.

Repertoire for the workshop comprises: an arrangement of Shaker Tune (Lord of the Dance) from an American folk song, used in Copland’s Appalachian Spring; Adiemus and Cantus Iteratus from Sir Karl Jenkins’ Songs of Sanctuary; and Hoedown, arranged by celebrated Anglesey composer Gareth Glyn.

Young orchestral players studying from grade 2 to grade 5 are invited to participate, with all instruments included except harp and saxophone.

REGISTER NOW – ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE WAIT LISTED UNTIL 31 MARCH 2020. Places are limited. Applications are considered in the order in which they are received. Consideration is also given to the balance of orchestral instruments. Places are not assured until you are notified in April of acceptance.

As part of the workshop experience, all participants to the workshop, and their family members, are invited to be part of this memorable concert with Ryan Bancroft, Sir Karl Jenkins, Jess Gillam, and the full BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with free and concessionary tickets for the main concert. Note – all concert tickets must be pre-booked and further information is available on the AFYM website afym.org.uk .
